Mussey Grade Road

Ramona, CA
November 2003

Mussey Grade Road was built in 1886 as an old stage coach route connecting the town of Julian with San Diego. Construction of the San Vicente Dam in the early 1940s created the San Vincente Resevoir, blocking Mussey Grade Road and leaving the small town of Fernbrook and the surrounding areas on a dead end. On November 7, 2003, Mussey Grade Road was granted an historical listing on the California Register of Historical Resources, thanks to a three-year campaign lead by Mussey Grade resident, Diane Conklin. Diane and the other members of the Mussey Grade community equate the drive down Mussey Grade Road with going down the rabbit hole in Alice’s Wonderland.
