Photographer Nanette Martin created the American Heroes lithograph in November 2001 as a fund-raiser to help feed the search and rescue dogs at Ground Zero; the project raised approximately $10,000 and fed each of the NY State Trooper's dogs for one year. A total of 421 signed and numbered lithographs were printed, one for every rescue worker killed at the World Trade Center; less than 100 are still available for purchase. The names, ranks and divisions of all 421 rescue workers killed at the World Trade Center form the border around the collage. Six of the seven images were photographed during the week of the attack, including: the face of a volunteer worker; a Port Authority Police Department van destroyed by falling debris; a clock on the face of a building at 220 Church Street that stopped at the time the first plane hit; the NYC skyline on September 17, 2001; firefighters leaving Ground Zero; and a background screen of an American flag hanging from a fire escape in Manhattan. The seventh image, the rescue dog, was photographed at the dog's home in Illinois in October 2001. The dog, Servus, sustained critical injuries at Ground Zero, which forced him into early retirement and eventually took his life on April 4, 2003.
