Los Alamos, NM June 2000 Rehabilitation is typically coordinated and implemented by leaders and members of the disaster-ridden community. However, because the impending monsoon season brought an imminent threat of mudslides to the LANL, nearly 1500 front-line firefighters were retained to expedite erosion control measures. The firefighters felled trees, raked, and installed wattles across drainage ways (tubes of straw used to impede runoff and promote new growth) for weeks after the fire was contained. |
