The Cerro Grande Fire burned nearly 48,000 acres in northern New Mexico between May 4 and May 21, 2000, making it the largest wildfire in New Mexico’s recorded history. Firefighters from 65 fire departments across New Mexico worked with more than 1100 firefighters from national teams, numerous aircraft and heavy equipment, and four Type I National Fire Management Teams to contain the fire.
