Ground Zero January 2002 By January 2002, most of the east, south and west foundation walls at Ground Zero were exposed. The east and south walls could be stabilized with tiebacks, while the west wall, a slurry wall, required rebuilding. Without the structural support of the World Trade Center buildings, the slurry failed and allowed water from the Hudson River to seep through and flood the bottom of the hole, compromising worker safety and complicating cleanup activities. Laborers hustled to pump the water out as steel workers hustled to erect a new wall. |
